Pittsburgh Design Services (PDS) is a diversified engineering, manufacturing and construction services company that offers a unique package of products and services to industrial and commercial clients. We started business in 1970 to provide engineering services to the steel industry in and around Pittsburgh. The company has grown to include sales and manufacturing of industrial cranes and hoists, structural and miscellaneous steel fabrication and design and manufacturing of customized machinery for the steel, aluminum, specialty metals, paper and mining industries.

PDS is currently structured around four divisions that offer the following services:


Engineering and Construction Services

  • Engineering, design, autoCAD drawings, and construction specifications for existing and new manufacturing facilities to include but not limited to buildings, equipment foundations, equipment installation, plant utilities, and material handling systems.
  • Field inspections, surveying and design analysis of existing structures, mill buildings, cranes, crane runways and bridges. Follow-up reports/recommendations and rehabilitation engineering.
  • Feasibility studies and cost estimates for the planning of new manufacturing facilities or improving or renovations of existing facilities.
  • Project management and construction supervision for new and maintenance projects.

Material Handling Division

  • Sales and manufacturing of cranes up to 50 ton capacity.
  • Sales of cranes up to 100 ton capacity (Manufacturing Sub-Contracted).
  • Modernization, remanufacturing and re-rating of all types of cranes, AC or DC.
  • Sales of wire rope and chain hoists (electric, air and manual- all major manufacturers), jib cranes and work station cranes. We specialize in hoists manufactured by Sheppard Niles, R&M, and ACCO.
  • Patented track monorail systems from simple monorails and cranes to complete custom designed plant wide material handling systems. Our largest system to date involved 24 cranes, 20 monorails and suppor1 structures with real time in- process inventory control. Many of the cranes and monorails included on-board automation.

Repair Parts Division

  • OEM parts for cranes and hoists including P&H, Yale, ACCO, Sheppard Niles, Lift Tech (MMM/CM/Shaw Box), Cleveland Tramrail, R&M, DeShazo, ACE Industries and many others.

Note: The "P&H" trademark is owned by Hamischfeger Corporation and is licensed exclusively for use in the industrial crane and hoist business to Morris Material Handling, Inc. It is used by PDS as reference to all cranes and hoists formerly manufactured by the Hamischfeger Corporation.

  • Custom made parts for older equipment no longer serviced by the original manufacturer such as wheels, axles, gears, bearings, seals, etc.
  • Generic replacement parts for cranes and hoists at considerable savings. Over the years we have located sources for many replacement parts such as contact tips, contactors, brake shoes, friction discs, bearings, seals, brake wheels, brake studs, etc. I etc. We can also duplicate over 5,000 gears, shafts, axles, wheels, etc. Give us a try on our aftermarket parts. Not only can we offer substantial savings, but delivery times are vastly improved compared to normal OEM delivery schedules.

Fabrication

  • Structural steel and speciajty fabrication including cranes, monorail systems, support steel, access platforms/ladders, pedestrian bridges and assembly of custom designed machinery with mechanical, electrical and piping components.
